Ballsin' Up: A Blunt Talk About Men's Mental Health (No 'Man Up' Nonsense)

Guys are brilliant at toughing things out and terrible at saying things out. We'll bench-press through a pulled muscle, drive home from a night out on three hours of sleep, and let a knot in the chest ride for weeks. Then we wonder why the head feels so heavy. Let's talk about it straight.
The "man up" myth is exactly backwards. Toughing it out silently isn't strength — it's just waiting. The genuinely ballsy move is naming the problem out loud. If you'd tell a mate to get a weird mole checked, you can tell a mate to talk to someone about how he's doing. Same logic.
Signs worth noticing — in yourself, or in a mate:
- Lost interest in stuff you used to love. The gym, the game, the hobby that ticked the boxes. When the fun goes quietly, that's a signal.
- Flat or snappy, more than usual. Everyone has a bad week. When it's been a bad month, take it seriously.
- Sleeping badly, drinking more, or just checking out and scrolling to escape.
- Big change in appetite or energy, up or down.
- Pulling away. Not answering, no longer buzzing about the thing he was always buzzing about.
What actually helps (not the cheesy stuff):
- Say it to one person. Not a TED talk — one person. A mate, a partner, a GP. Naming it to a human you trust is step one, and it's the hardest and most valuable.
- Move. A run, a lift, a walk. It's not a cure-all, but a moving mind thinks clearer.
- Talk to a doctor. Mental health is health. Going to a GP about your head is no more embarrassing than going about your back.
- Cut the yawning gap. If you're up at 2am convinced the world is ending, remember it's 2am. The 2am brain is a bad narrator.
Strength isn't never breaking. It's being honest about the bits that feel heavy — and getting a hand. That's not weakness. That's ballsin' up.
You'd check your balls in the shower. Give your head the same courtesy. If things feel heavy for longer than a bad week, or you're noticing a mate going quiet — say something. It's a move, not a moment. 🏀
